This Handbook is the conclusion of a three year research effort in the field of conductive soldering.  Research started with an investigation of soldering irons and moved to the development of an automatic process monitoring system for manual soldering.

The first step in this research attempted to understand the direction of the electronics industry and the day-to-day problems in hand soldering and rework.  To gain this understanding, a workshop was conducted in May 1986.  This workshop was a milestone in a cooperative research effort between the government and industry.

The next step was to explore soldering as a science and apply current technology to the age-old process of hand soldering.  In order to treat soldering as a science, the physical laws which define its behavior were defined.  This entailed a detailed investigation of both the thermal and electrical aspects of soldering tools and the hand soldering process.  Unfortunately, when dealing with thermodynamics and electrodynamics, the mathematics are cumbersome.  Due to the variety of different backgrounds of process engineers, the Handbook was written with the intent of making the topics covered not dependent on the equations for understanding.
